Travel Tips by World Nomads

Here are a few things to consider when choosing your travel insurance plan to ensure it covers everything you need:

Cancellation: If you’re seriously sick or injured and cannot make your trip, you’ll want insurance that covers cancellation. Be sure to purchase your policy when booking your trip, as not all policies cover cancellation, and they may only cover certain reasons or times. Carefully read the policy wording before buying.

Medical Expenses: Check that your insurance covers emergency medical treatment for serious injuries, illnesses, and accidents while abroad. Be aware that pre-existing conditions may not be covered. Remember, travel insurance doesn’t replace health insurance back home.

Medical Evacuation & Repatriation: Ensure your policy covers emergency transport to a hospital or your home if you’re unable to continue your trip. Providers may insist on returning you home as soon as you’re fit to travel if you need ongoing treatment.

Stolen Gear: Many policies have a per-item value limit for lost or stolen gear. Make sure the limit is high enough to cover your valuables. Always keep your valuables with you and avoid leaving them unattended in public spaces.

Adventurous Activities: Some adventure activities may be excluded from basic policies, so check carefully what is covered. You may need to upgrade your policy to include activities you’re planning to do.

Work, Volunteer & Study: If you plan to work, study, or volunteer during your trip, ensure your policy covers these activities. Some higher-risk experiences may require additional coverage.

Personal Liability: If you’re found at fault for an accident, you’ll want to be covered for any legal claims. Not all policies include this, so make sure to read the details carefully.

Safety Considerations: Check your government’s travel warnings and keep up with the latest travel safety advice. Most policies don’t cover travel to regions affected by war, terrorism, or natural disasters, so make sure you’re aware of the limitations.

Important Things to Know

Travel insurance doesn’t cover everything, so read the full policy wording when getting a quote to make sure it’s right for you. Coverage details, benefits, and exclusions vary based on your country, the plan you choose, and any additional upgrades. Don’t assume you’re covered—always read the terms carefully to avoid surprises if you need to make a claim. If you have questions, consult your provider.
